CETel to provide fibre-like connectivity across Africa.

CETel, the provider of global managed end-to-end communications solutions, has signed a five-year contract with SES Networks to connect new exploration and production sites in Africa via SES Networks’ medium earth orbit (MEO) O3b satellite constellation, SES and CETel announced on Wednesday, 10 January 2018.

CETel will leverage the O3b fleet’s low latency and high throughput capabilities for big data applications required by the exploration and production industry. With round-trip latencies below 150 milliseconds, MEO-enabled networks are on par with standard fibre connections and are more reliable and faster to deploy than other infrastructure.

Flare, a Kenyan emergency services platform that was launched in December 2017, has introduced a new product that consolidates ambulance service providers into one network. The “Rescue” product, will ensure that users have access to medical assistance within 15 minutes in an emergency.

The platform is connecting users to more than 50 ambulances and up to 10 fire trucks. Flare plans to expand the fleet and may also add private security and police. A Cape Town-based drone operator, UAV Industries, announced on Tuesday 24 October that the company has raised ZAR6.84 million (US$499,000) in funding from Glenheim Venture Capital Company, in what was the first direct investment made by Glenheim’s Section 12J fund.

The company, which was launched three years ago, offers drone training and leasing services, and according to UAV Industries the company has seen a 300 percent year-on-year growth off the back of a multi-million Rand turnover.
