he World Energy Council has released its Energy Trilemma Index.

The tool ,produced in partnership with Oliver Wyman, ranks countries on their ability to provide sustainable energy through 3 dimensions: Energy security, Energy equity (accessibility and affordability), Environmental sustainability.

The ranking measures overall performance in achieving a sustainable mix of policies and the balance score highlights how well a country manages the trade-offs of the Trilemma with “A” being the best.

Balancing the three goals constitutes a ‘dilemma’ and is the basis for a secure, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy system.

Global smartphone penetration to hit 66% in 2018

In 2018, 66% of individuals in an array of 52 key countries, which includes South Africa along with various developed and developing countries across the globe, will own a smartphone. This number is up from 63% in 2017 and 58% in 2016, according to Zenith’s Mobile Advertising Forecasts 2017, published on 16 October 2017.

A Cape Town-based drone operator, UAV Industries, announced on Tuesday 24 October that the company has raised ZAR6.84 million (US$499,000) in funding from Glenheim Venture Capital Company, in what was the first direct investment made by Glenheim’s Section 12J fund.

The company, which was launched three years ago, offers drone training and leasing services, and according to UAV Industries the company has seen a 300 percent year-on-year growth off the back of a multi-million Rand turnover.

Taxify to offer insurance to drivers and riders.

Rivals to Uber in the mobile taxi industry, Taxify, has launched a new personalised insurance package for their partner drivers and riders, called Taxify Cover.

Uchenna Chukwuebuka Okafor, Operations Manager in Lagos, highlighted the fact that most traditional insurance covers differ from driver to driver and these covers usually do not extend to cover a rider’s belongings.
