Accenture, JCSE partner to help prepare South African youth for the future of work.

Accenture has partnered with the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and the Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE), to provide both training and job opportunities to vulnerable youth for the future of work. This year’s activities culminated in Hour of Code, hosted at the Tshimologong Precinct – an inspiring coding-focused workshop and maker space, attended by 65 youth from across Johannesburg.

South African students to take part in the supercomputing competition in Germany

South African students to take part in the supercomputing competition in Germany.

The annual Centre for High-Performance Computing (CHPC) conference, which took place in Cape Town recently, provided a platform for South African students to showcase their skills in building supercomputers and their innovative ideas on how to prevent cybercrimes through the Student Cluster Competition, and the Student Cyber-Security challenge.

South Africa takes 6th place in Global Robotics Olympics

A team of learners from Tshwane, mentored by the University of Pretoria’s (UP) MakerSpace centre and a group of UP engineering students, was placed sixth out of 180 teams from around the world participating in the annual FIRST Global Challenge Robotics Olympics in Mexico City.

The teams were required to build and code their own robot. Team South Africa (which nicknamed itself ‘The Springbots’), in addition to placing sixth, won The Walt Disney Award for Imagination and Creativity, awarded to the team that displays the most creative approach to problem-solving. Godfrey Mutabazi, Executive Director, Uganda Communications Commission

The head of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) says the country should have 100% mobile phone coverage by the end of 2019.

Godfrey Mutabazi told The Daily Monitor that he expects national roaming to be implemented next year to ensure that users retain coverage even in areas where their own network provider has not yet reached.

Mutabazi also added that a new licensing regime will call for service providers to offer a minimum of 3G connectivity to every parish in the country, while 4G services are also expected to be expanded out from the main urban …read more
